I too have been ML hunting evenings here in SW Iowa. I agree, the deer are very unpredictable. I attribute this unpredictability to:

1. Warm weather

2. Grouping up

3. Pressure from others hunting

4. A dwindling food sources causing them to move about more

If we could get some cold, nasty, snowy, weather down here I do think the deer hunting would improve significantly.

I think it's based on unstable weather conditions, constant changes in wind direction, full moon (last few days)and flat out too warm.

The first week when it was really cold had them on a good predictable feeding pattern in my area, unfortunately only small bucks and countless does showed up at the buffet.

Agreed with pupster.

While it was cold last week the deer were coming out consistently. But with gun season just getting over, the big bucks were hanging back till dark. In years past with cold and snow you could maybe get that shot at a big buck after Jan. 1, but usually closer to the 10th. With this warm weather, your chances diminish. Big bucks are more nocturnal. Not saying it can't happen but percentages are down.

But...hold on. About the time you decide to watch the field from the truck instead of setting up. (Because you have only been seeing small bucks, does and fawns.) That's when Mr. Big shows up following an "in heat" fawn out to the cornfield. It's happened to me.

Some of this years fawns will be coming in heat in the next week or so. So they saying goes, you have to be out there to shoot one. Keep after it!

Pray to the Sky Gods for snow, snow and more snow!!!

I bet they are still using the same fields if they aren't being pressured. My guess is they are coming out after the sun goes down a feeding most of the night. Hope next weeks nastier weather changes it up.
