WI bird, first with a bow, long read

My 2012 Wisconsin turkey season began Wednesday morning with me up at 3:30am heading down to my farm. Actually, I was going to be hunting my dad’s land which borders mine since all of our trailcam pictures showed that the turkeys were staying there and not on mine. My dad had a first season tag too, but lucky for me and unlucky for him, my mom decided that this was the week they were going to be in FL on their yearly visit to some friends! Too bad dad! He ended up getting a leftover 3rd season tag so he’s not missing out completely. I got to the blind I had set up on the edge of a picked cornfield just before first light to the sounds of a turkey gobbling on the hill above me.
Now last year was my first year back as a Wisconsin resident and I had to buy a leftover tag for later in the seasons. My 2011 season did not go well. I hunted all 5 days and saw one gobbler at a distance. It was tough hunting in our area. By all the birds on our trailcams, this year seemed to be looking up. We had a trailcam set up right where the blind was, and this was almost an everyday occurrence!

Back to Wednesday morning, I got a couple hen decoys set up and got all settled in to my blind with my bow on one side of me, and my trusty 12ga on the other. I’d never shot a turkey with a bow and it was my goal for the year, but I also have a really hard time justifying passing a nice gobbler that’s in gun range! The lone gobbler that had been gobbling in the dark flew down to a clover patch across the field from me. He came to within 75yds and didn’t like the looks of the hen and circled all the way around me through the brush and popped back out at 40yds on the opposite side of me. Still out of bow range but within 12ga range! I elected to pass on him as it was the first morning and I really wanted a bow kill. I had turkeys around me in the field from 7am to 10am, most of the time having toms fanned out within sight, but nothing willing to come to the decoys. To defend my calling skills, they were all henned up though! I sat in the blind until 12:30 when I had to get out to do some work on the cranberry marsh, which I reluctantly did since there was still a gobbler in the field and he was gobbling every 5mins like clockwork. A couple hours later I was back in the blind with a b-mobile decoy added to mix.

The afternoon was a bust on seeing any toms. I had 3 hens walk through and heard 3 or 4 gobbles close but that was it. I had a kid to pick up at daycare so I was out of the woods by 5:30 and dreaming of my next day in the blind on Saturday.
Friday I had to go down to the farm and work on the cranberry marsh. I had Prestin, my soon to be stepson, along to help out. First thing we did was hit the trailcams to see what I missed on Thursday and Friday morning by not being there. First cam was a blank. The cam by the blind surprised me in that it didn’t have many pictures on it like usual but it did have a few of this guy, 5yds from my blind!

That got me fired up! Next on the agenda for us was work, then a quick break for a couple casts in the pond….I had water running back into it from the cranberries and that always makes for some good fishing.

3:30 Saturday morning finally came and I was up and on my way South with a cup of coffee and a donut in hand J By 5:45am I was walking to my blind being serenaded by multiple gobblers up on the hill! Once again, I set out the decoys, well decoy…this time I was going to try just one hen and see what they thought of it. Dawn broke and the gobbles hadn’t stopped. It sounded like 3 or 4 birds, then 4 or 5, then 5 or 6! Things were beginning to look awesome for the morning. At about 7am I could hear birds flying down into the part of the field I couldn’t see. That’s about the time the gobbles stopped and the hen squawking started. I battled it out with some unseen hens for about 10mins, trying to tick them off enough to come see the new girl in the area. That didn’t seem to work so I just shut up and waited. 5 minutes later a lone hen came walking down through, gave my decoy the stink eye, and kept on going. Another 5 minutes went by and a couple birds sounded off up on the hill again but a lot closer. I gave a couple soft yelps on the glass which were immediately cut off by a few thunderous gobbles! Game on! Birds started showing in the timber and a good tom hit the field edge and went into full strut.

Another one popped out and with a few excited clucks and purrs from me, he was on a dead run for my decoy! I had time to drop my striker, grab my bow, and draw and he was starting to fluff out for my decoy at just under 15yds. With no time to think, I released my first ever arrow at a turkey! The 3 blade Muzzy took him dead center and he was slightly quartering to me. He ran about 30yds and piled up. It was at this time that I noticed the field edge was full of red heads! My dead turkey was jumped on by 9 other birds and completely pummeled. They were making quite a racket and gobbling steady. I gave my dad a call in FL to let him know the good news and to let him hear the turkeys that would be waiting for him when his season came.

I sent out a few texts and sat back and watched a little more of the show before going and getting my bird.

Being by myself, I had to set up the gorilla pod and do some self photos with the timer…always nice and time consuming! My bird was 21 lb 2 oz, 10.25”beard, and 1” spurs.

Nice bird, story, and hunt. Congrats:way:

For some reason your thread won't open with the app. Strange:confused:

Congrats on your first turkey with your bow! I also use my muzzy 3-blades, for turkeys, just because thats what I use on everything, but fish.

Great story and photos! Can't wait to get out there myself and try it with a bow for the first time!
