Whitetails Unlimited Funds more than $ 6 Million in Projects in the Deer Triangle States of Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri

Local WTU chapters fund a wide variety of local projects in their home states

Funding from Whitetails Unlimited chapters have provided more than $6.25 million in local projects in the Deer Triangle states of Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri, and despite the economic downturn, attendance at WTU events remains strong.

"After looking at our numbers at the end of FY 2010, we find that over the years WTU has been able to fund projects totaling $6,284,781 in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri," said Whitetails Unlimited Executive Director Pete Gerl. "Like everyone, we've had some hiccups, but our membership remains strong and we expect to continue funding projects in the same manner as in the past."

Whitetails Unlimited conducts fundraising events to raise resources for conservation, education, and the preservation of the hunting tradition. Unique among conservation organizations, WTU returns 50 percent of net event proceeds back to local chapters, to use on local projects.

"By working with WTU, local chapters in Iowa have funded projects including range improvements, scholarships, handicapped and wounded warrior hunts, youth outdoor education events, hunter safety classes, state shooting events, and a number of habitat acquisition projects," said Iowa Field Director Tim Powers. "Iowa started with $6,963 in projects in 1985, and last year local Iowa projects received $348,340. In total, WTU has provided more than four million dollars for local projects in Iowa."

The total for Iowa is $4,173,081.

The first Whitetails Unlimited banquet in Missouri was held in 1996, which returned $1,473 for local projects. Since that time more than a million dollars has been returned through WTU chapters for a wide range of projects. "Our local chapters have been able to improve habitat and shooting ranges, educate thousands of youngsters on gun and hunting safety, fund scholarships, and provide equipment and training for the National Archery in the Schools Program," said Missouri Field Director Dan Vogt. WTU has provided $1,111,013 in total through FY 2010 for a wide variety of projects.

In Nebraska, Whitetails Unlimited chapters have returned $664,962 since the first banquet in 1996. WTU Field Director Larry Yost organizes banquets in Nebraska, along with western Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas, and Oklahoma, "People who live in Nebraska are very aware of the human connection to the outdoors and are enthusiastic hunters. These people understand conservation and the need to pass traditions and resources to the next generation. It's a real treat to be able to provide a vehicle for them to fund local projects to improve habitat and programs," Yost said. "Nebraska funds have helped improve many local gun and archery ranges that provide the public a safe place to shoot and educate young hunters."

All three field directors note that groups who have local projects in need of funding should call them to discuss the possibility of hosting a WTU event. "When we find people who are passionate about improving their community, the hard part is over," said Tim Powers. Larry Yost agreed, noting, "With just a few local contacts, we can almost always figure out the details in order to put on a successful banquet."

Dan Vogt said that his best tool for expanding the number of events he organizes in Missouri and Arkansas is an existing event. "People come to a banquet and see how much fun everyone has, then they see how much money can be returned for local projects, and they call me because they are involved in their own local group that needs to raise funds."
