Your Favorite Time of the Season

While on stand, I got to thinking (imagine that... a wandering mind on the deer stand) about what my favorite time of the hunting season is to be, well, hunting. Strangely, I decided my favorite isn't the pre-rut or the rut but late season. 'Why on earth do I like late season when it's 20 below and 3 feet of snow up here in MN?' Well, my question was answered when just a 1/4 mile off I could here guys blastin' away sighting in their guns, and four wheelers on a nearby road screamed by, and a neighbor was cutting lumber in the woods just nearby... and... well, in this area of suburban sprawl I have concluded that my favorite time to hunt is late season... quiet, alone, hunting solo with only the deer and squirrols. There's my rant.

What time of the season is your favorite and why?

#1. Oct. 1- Oct 17 The first 2 weeks of muzzleloader season. I like it b/c some big mature bucks are still on a pattern, they haven't thrown caution to the wind and aren't cruising anywhere in a 5000 acre block of bush. If I can find where one good one is coming to a food source before dark I can have a good chance to take him. This time of the season is the only time that gives me enough daylight to hunt after work as well. Already I'd be down to about 1 hr of daylight after I get home to hunt, not nearly enough time to get set up. By the 3rd week of Oct. the moose hunters come out with their rifles and start banging away, plus they can hunt deer if they have a moose tag. Yes....they can rifle hunt whitetails in mid Oct..

Starting today, regular rifle season opens for deer and goes for 5 weeks!

For 2 or 3 weeks the deer will be pressured more than any other time. Luckily most guys are too lazy to get into the woods and spend the day cruising the backroads.

The old bucks are never seen in the open from mid Oct until the first week of Dec. when 95% of the hunters are done. I'd take the last week of the year for my second choice to be out there as the insanity has dwindled down. Plus, this is a good time to see a big buck in the daylight, if you're a mile back in the forest watching cutlines.

That is why I'll take early Oct over any other time of the year. My best 3 bucks were killed then and should have had another booner during that time frame if I hadn't hurried the shot...rookie mistake!

My favorite time to hunt is Right when rifle season opens. Every year it seems that the bucks start to move around that time of the year. I have been bow hunting this past week. Been in the stand everyday. Hunted in 3 differant stands. And everytime it was in the morning. And the past few days i have seen a lot of movement. So around Nov. 12 is my fav. time of the season to hunt! And another reason its my fav. time is because its getting colder and starting to snow. (if you get lucky) Thats why!
