Sioux Falls ICE STORM!

Hey guys...well it looks like winter is back for us up here in SE SD and NW IOWA. Never seen anything like it before. It started off by raining, then moved to a sleet mix and then basically sleet/hail/rain mix. I left last night to get a few groceries and when I came out of the store, the wind had picked up and was coming down sideways. I think I know what it would feel like to get a tattoo on your face. Wow those little ice balls hurt! I'm guessing we have over an inch of ice on side streets and is still raining this morning. Power out in a lot of spots throughout NW Iowa and SE South Dakota. Trees are taking a beating as they can't handle the weight of the ice and we are losing limbs left and right. Here are a few pictures from around Sioux Falls area. Love the stop sign picture!

Worst is yet to come I'm afraid...6-10 inches of snow between right now and tomorrow. That on top of the ice, and I don't know if we will have a tree left!

YEOUCH!!!! We had an April storm like that in about 91 (+/- a couple years) and if I never see that much ice damage to trees again it will be too soon. I remember trees breaking that sounded like rifles hots up & down the valley. :( I'll take some snow but PLEASE keep the ice up north. Stay safe!!!

weather is funny, we are 3 hours north of Sioux Falls and we have not seen a flake or snow and no ice

One hour south and they had 6 inches of snow

Sounds like they got real similar weather as here. less than 100 miles apart and basically straight SW of us which would have put them on the same line of the storm. Not good

Thanks Shedder. My wife's sister and her family live in Yankton. Sounds like I better check in with them.

Getting weather like that every once in a while is cool but then when you have to deal with it it sucks. It's really sad to see the damage tree's get in that stuff! It's inconvenient to have to drive in and to loose power but the tree damage is permanent.

I'm in Yankton, and it's not quite that bad here. We were just a couple degrees warmer, so we didn't get quite as much ice accumulation. A good chunk of it came as rain. There is a pretty good coating of ice on everything now though, and they're calling for more snow tonight and tomorrow.

Thanks Notch, my wife called her sister to get an update also. She said they had some ice but it had changed to snow. Hopefully it will melt fast.

Been up most of the night here in NW Iowa...sounds like a freakin' war zone outside. Chainsaw will be getting a workout for sure. A couple hit the house and garage, so hoping no major roof damage, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'll add a few pics when daylight breaks if I can convince myself its safe to be outside for a few minutes...

A few added pics of just around my house. Maybe hard to tell from the pictures but I am standing in the middle of the street looking South and then a pic of our street looking North. I couldn't go down the block without hitting huge tree branches because they are hanging so low. Tried to weave in and out but there was not much I could do to not hit anything. Definitely the worst storm I can ever remember. And is only going to consist of about 8 inches of snow. Terrible

Looks all too familiar Kenny. Heard the old hometown of Sibley looks worse than when the tornado came through.

Daylight revealed our grove and yard are indeed as bad is it sounded during the night...

It was tough on my fences...dog will have to be kennel bound for a few days rather than roaming the back yard as is the norm...

House and garage took a couple of hits that really rocked us, but no major roof damage apparent yet. I was happy that my practice treestand was narrowly missed :D

Nobody was harmed any more than losing a few hours of sleep, so it'll be fine. With a little warm weather and a bunch of chainsaw hours we'll have it cleaned up soon enough I'm sure. Be careful out there...there's still stuff coming down around here.
