For those of you who frequent this website you know that the January Antlerless season is very controversial with many of our members.

The Iowa DNR wants hunters to harvest antlerless deer in the southern two county tiers. There is no doubt that the balancing act for the DNR, hunters, and special interest groups is a complex task.

Some members believe that the antlerless deer population is all ready low in many parts of the state and in certain areas of the southern two county tiers.

Other member’s believe that far too many shed bucks are mistaken for does and are being shot during this season.

Then there is the argument that the DNR really doesn’t care if shed bucks are being shot, they simply want to reduce the total number of deer in these counties.

This season is not open in the counties I normally hunt, but I'm going to travel to a county where it is. I'll be super cautious on what I shoot.

Myself and a group of 5-6 friends have hunted Taylor county the last two years. Personally if this were in my normal hunting area I would not be too fond of it. But since its an area we cannot hunt during the bow/shotgun season anymore, I really dont care if we shoot the shed bucks or not. Down there if it doesnt have antlers, its getting some lead thrown at it.

That's a great attitude to have!

I really.hope your group stays away from the areas I hunt!

WTF???? :thrwrck: A healthy deer herd should be a statewide goal, not just the area a certain individual hunts. Maybe Sureshot and I have the minority opinion, but I doubt it!

You are the exact reason why I think they should get rid of that season

I have to agree with you...... so it's screw the other guy as long as it's not where you hunt.... nice attitude. Where do you hunt, maybe we can get some early season tags and all come there and hunt. :thrwrck:

That kind of attutude make me ABSOLUTELY STEAMING MAD!! Just as bad is the people who say "If I don't shoot that buck someone else will"

Thats pretty bunk, dude....

While this season doesn't affect me down here in AZ, if the deer population is not what it really should be and is declining overall, then I would support, by proxy, removing that season. I recently got back in touch with a very good friend of mine (not on this forum) and we were talking about deer hunting. He was tellling me he and his group have not been seeing the numbers they usually see and he honestly thought the population was crashing, likely from over-harvesting. Not living in Iowa for over a decade, I naively dismissed it because I didn't think the IA deer could ever decline. To see several members here express the same sentiments really makes me stop and think. I've been hunting my whole life and have been committed to conservation of all species for equally as long. Down in AZ, I'm in the minority, but if helping a population recover means missing some hunting opportunities in the short-term, than I'm all for it. I've always got fishing to keep me busy and have been trying to free some time to do more of it. And I have to wholeheartedly agree with the several previous comments: WTF DUDE??? :thrwrck:

If the county quota is gone can I get a landowner license for this season? I'm thinking no, but can't remember. Thanks.

Yikes!!!

I'll be hunting to fill the freezer. Bow/muzz is my horn hunting time. Now I'm hungry. I voted yes because I will be hunting the season and I WILL BE CAREFUL!! But, it would not upset me one bit if this was the last year for it, especially after hearing some of the attitudes people are taking into this hunt. Selfish and disappointing are the two words that come to mind! We need to be team players here...

With a few shed bucks running around, I think I may take the bow and smack a few does this weekend. Looks like the weather will be nice, and I figure if their within bow range, I can tell rather its a buck or a doe

This is perhaps the most selfish and moronic thing I have ever read on any forum.

Exactly why I hate this season. I happen to live in and own property in a county that has the late season. Unfortunately, we have a lot of people that travel down here to hunt from counties north of us. Many have no place to hunt so they end up road hunting and trespassing. More than once I have had poachers shoot deer on my farm during the late season. Many others are like "biggest buck" and just dont give a crap. I know there are some big changes coming for the future deer sesasons and I hope this season is eliminated.

Rifle hunt

I've never hunted Iowa, but I do not understand why the DNR would risk the loss of so many shed bucks. Think of how many big bruisers die without head gear. That is sad, and there is a muzzleloader season in January already. Our bow season in MN ends on December 31st, and sometimes I feel that is too late (increased pressure and stress on "stressed" animals). A rifle season in January is really questionable?

Our hunt for doe down there is not hurting too many residents, trust me. For starters, this guys ground we hunt on we have hunted for nearly 30 years. Now the mighty dollar has taken over as he has leased all of his ground to a non-resident group of hunters. As did his neighbor who we used to hunt for many years as well. Nearly 1500 acres that are not being managed correctly now due to the leases. The landowners know this as they have said it to me, but that quick buck is worth much more to them than the health of the herd. They're your typical non-hunting farmers and for years have complained about the over population and how they destroy their crops each and every year. So blast me all you want, I dont care. My group has taken more does out of the herd down there than the non-residents have taken bucks and does combined. Each year we see around 150-200 deer, all on this less than 1500 acres. And we have yet to shoot a shed buck out of the many does we have taken. Selfish attitude, maybe. Somebody explain to me how my moronic theory of herd management is any worse than what is happening with these Non-residents leasing the ground and NOT managing it at all?? They're shooting an average of 6-8 deer a year. All of which were bucks this year. Not one single doe off all of that land in 2009 with the exception of the ones we shot, last January.

There's that many non-residents hunting on that guy's land? Its not exactly easy to get an Iowa tag ya know...
