Awesome. I'm assuming I should spray first and then plant to be safe or does it not matter?

Also, how do you determine how much thatch is too much? I don't really have a way to scrape any of the thatch off due to the plots location. The field I'm planting has been grassses for years so there is quite a bit of thatch coverage (Can see bare dirt if you look closely, but it is mostly covered)View attachment 130121

Won't matter if you spray gly before or after planting. Might try burning the dead thatch ahead of time to get better seed to soil contact. Can't quite see in the picture, but looks like some of the weeds are broadleaf that are likely resistant to gly.

Yes there a few broadleaf weeds but it’s mostly grasses that are the main issue

I have had trouble with brassica germination in the past when I tried to work through too much thatch. Some is good, but you have to get your seed on /in the soil and not have such a mat of grass that it suppresses germination. It is hard to define "too much", but I do recognize the look of it now.

If you can get any type of a drag in there to scrape it up, I would do it. One time I drug it until it was clumped up and either pushed it off the field with the tractor bucket OR just left the clumps and planted around them. You could also think about burning the thatch off.

I'd like to try my hand at broadcasting some brassicas. I have a quarter acre spot in mind for a first go round. I have gly and 24d to kill off the grass/weeds in the spot. My question is about getting it sprayed around rains. Say it is dry one day, but supposed to rain the next. Is that a bad idea to spay if its going to rain the next day? Or say even spray in the morning if its supposed to rain later in the day?

No issue at all. I’d prefer rain the next day if u applying 2,4-d. All that stuff is gonna kill the plant in first 60 minutes anyways.

Anyone on here…. No living plant when u plant brassicas …. Needs to all be dead. Like any N user: corn, brassicas, etc - doesn’t like competition & I would wanna have residue minimized. Like if a dude killed 2’ tall grass a couple weeks ago… way too much.

I personally like doing an additional GLY & Ammonium sulfate spray the day I seed brassicas. If any bit of weeds or anything is there. Gets those brassicas started with zero competition. If you planted with little grasses or broadleaves growing - they are already ahead of your brassicas by a good bit & will cause issues. When u walk away from seeding brassicas by making sure there’s not one living plant in there.
Another example I’ll do… maybe I got a section of soybeans that got eaten up…. I’ll spread in those and spray gly so the brassicas can get to filling those areas in & all the weeds are nuked.

I think you'll want to wait 2 weeks after spraying 24d before seeding brassicas. It has some residual.

Think I will get down there this weekend to spray. Come back in a couple weeks to burn it and broadcast, maybe spry gly again on any new weeds or grass that have sprouted up. Hopefully all these rains keep coming as I'll be planting it a little big later than ideal timing, more towards back half of August.
