Regulation on POSSESSING GAME AFTER THE SEASON

You cannot possess game or furbearing animals or their pelts, except for deer venison, more than 30 days after the close of the season for that species. A person having lawful possession of deer venison which is taken with a valid deer hunting license may hold the venison from the date of harvest until the following Sept. 1. From Sept. 1 until the first day of the next open deer season for which the person holds a valid deer hunting license, the person shall not possess more than 25 pounds of deer venison. Any person may possess up to 25 pounds of deer venison if the deer was obtained from a lawful source. A permit to hold for a longer period may be granted by the department.

I was reading through the regulations and came across this. What am I supposed to do on September 1, 2004; throw away all venison I have left over 25 pounds? I'm tempted to apply for the permit just to be difficult. Dumb law if you ask me. What's the reason behind this law?

Don't you know General...if you have deer in the freezer in September, you MUST have poached it...

I think that with the increased bag limits this law could be revised.

I was told that the law was on the books to make it easier to prosecute poachers when meat was found in their freezers. Kinda like the law where drug dealers are charged with selling drugs without buying the correct stamps. Someone please correct me if this is not right.

You can contact the DNR and get an extension.

The law is a little goofy.Especially now that you can harvest so many deer.

...I have always been told this is a "foot in the door" law...if law enforcement is building a case against a suspected poacher (for instance) and they need a closer look inside the residence or storage area they can go to the court and get a search warrant based on this law...I don't think it is used that often but have heard of a few cases of it being the last piece of the puzzle before busting a poaching ring...

...since we are on the topic (kinda) is it true that any mounted duck (or goose) is suppose to count against your waterfowl possesion limit?...

They way it has always been taught in Hunter Ed here is that it is a law that is used against poachers. The Game Warden usually goes out of his way to say, "we are not looking for people who have some deer in their freezer from last year, we are looking for those who are poaching game year round." Like stated above it seems to be one of those laws so they can tack on the fines for poachers they want to convict.

I guess that makes a little more sense out of it. Just seems that if they're going to post a law, everyone should be held to it. Whatever it takes to get poachers is okay with me. Just seems that most people that poach do so for antlers, not meat. I don't know how most poachers go about it, but it seems to go like this...Shoot a big buck, take a chainsaw to the neck, and leave the meat.

I've been told that this was also to prevent trappers from keeping furs until prices went up. Don't know if its true.
