Scent control

New Member
I'm A new bowhunter and want help learning about scent control. I saw an ad on some product that has silver in it. There are so many choices, can anyone help me. Thanks

Try some Dead Down Wind. Its a spray seems to be pretty popular. I also use some Deer dander on my boots. And you also have to play the wind with your stands.

I am glad you said scent control and not scent "elimination" which is a myth.

It is my opinion that most of the sprays are somewhat effective in reducing your scent, but you still have to play the wind to consistently be successful. Some of the sprays work on different principles than others, you will probably have to do your own research to decide which ones you prefer.

Save you're money - In my opinion - the concept of scent "reduction" is a joke. The people preaching this stuff are paid to say so - and won't show you when they get winded - the beauty of editing. A whitetails nose is so powerful that they can be compared to that of a dogs nose. Consider what a dog is able to smell / track - and realize that they will smell human regardless. No-one can argue that - it's been proven!

Save you money - hunt the wind, and move around alot. Everytime you go into/out of an area, you leave scent. Hunt new locations constantly to keep from allowing the deer to pattern you!

Could not have said it better myself!

This is not to say you can completely ignore your scent, but try your best to keep your scent to a minimum with proven things like a shower, scentless soaps, deodorant...etc. Avoid getting your gas in your hunting clothes, avoid that piece of pizza before you go out, after showering avoid drying off with your wifes fu-fu smelling towels...basically use common sense here.

I do not get paid to say this and have to pay for every bit of product that I use.

I personally will not hunt without scentblocker or in some cases scent-loc. I will say that it is only a part of the equation. You still have to shower with scentless soap, prepare your underlayers and store them properly, dress in the field and even play the wind. However, I have seen it work when you know you should be busted.

I take every precaution I can and know that without the scent eliminating products that I would not shoot the deer that I do nor would they be the quality that they are!

The people that complain that it does not work are those that do not take the precautions or smoke or expect it to be the cure-all. You still have to be aware of the situations and conditions.

I am a firm believer. Once you experience the results you will never hunt without it!

LET'S GET READY TO RUUUMMMBBBBLLLLLLLLLLEEEE!!!!!LOL!

Maybe the scent stuff helps, but if ya don't play the wind first, you'll get PEGGED!!!

I can go into the woods with a cameraman and a bunch of stinky gear (as we hunt everyday), sit in the right location on a cold morning and not be winded because of thermals.... Back in the days I used to believe this was due to the effectiveness of clothing, sprays, washes, and the neat waffers I had hanging off me all-over the place - just like the heros I watched on TV....

Point is - you don't know what the wind is doing all the time. Wind currents and thermals play a HUGE factor into this. This is what often creates the illusion that many of these products work - when in-fact, you're wind isn't making it to the nose of that warry whitetail. Also - what age class are you talking about? I can get winded by young bucks and does all the time without them "freaking" too much - strictly because of the areas I hunt. Try getting away with that on a 4-1/2 or older deer. We'll see how you're carbon works then!

If there was a way that I could be scent free - believe me - I'd be doing it. I can't imagine what being truely "scent free" would allow me to do. What a dream that would be!

Okay I am going to spill the beans and tell you all the biggest secret in deer hunting scent control EVER. I see the talk about scent-loc, sprays, putting smoke on your clothes, etc. But nothing compaes to the ultimate secret to "forgetting the wind, just hunt."

Here goes and I cannot beleive I am telling you this for FREE!

The biggest secret in the history of hunting:
1) SHoot a doe in heat
2) Put her loins on the grill
3) stand naked in the smoke of the doe-in-heat meat grilling to cover your body odor
4) eat the loins
5) put your scent-loc suit on the grill
6) crank the grill all the way up until your suit is burnt to a crisp (your carbon is now reactivated and will actually work)
7) Put on your striped bib overalls that you burned leaves in last fall.
8) go hunting.

There you have it... the real secret. If you want to be on my pro-staff, just give me a call. I have a couple openings available.

That's funny, but don't ya need the scent-loc clothing to shoot the doe in heat first?

Oh yes Gold Tip I forgot... Hang the scent loc clothing in your stand, then go hunt the other stand. The scent loc clothing will help redirect the deer movement towards the stand you are in. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Somebody with more energy than me needs to look at all the harvest photos here and count how many of the hunters are wearing some sort of scent reduction clothing, how many aren't and how many you can't tell.

I stopped wearing my scent blocker under suit this year for three reasons. #1 it was too hot this fall, #2 the neck zipper broke, #3 I started listening to the rhetoric against it.

My results so far, 2006, five does with, 2007 five does without. No bucks either year (so far). You have to be careful interpreting results. The end result, dead deer, so far has been the same, however, by this time last year I had passed on several basket racks, this year I have seen one. Again, this could be due to factors other than scent but I had about six baskets on my trailcam and I've seen one from my stand. My doe sightings are also down this year from last. I should clarify this, my doe sightings in my core hunting area, are down this year. Scent control? Don't know. Could I have shot more does outside my core area with scent blocker clothes? Don't know, but I was in doe heaven and only came away with three at one place and two at another. Next fall if I have any discretionary capital I may (probably will) purchase another set of scent suppersion base layers and see what my results are.

there are two types of human scent in my opinion. i call them "sticky" and "temporary". the "sticky" can be taken care of by taking a shower with deer hunting soap. the "temporary" is what you would get on you for touching a couch or something of the sort. a scent that will cling to you not for very long. this can be removed by using scent reduction spray. i personally am 100% sold on Dead Down Wind. its the best thing out there in my opinion.
